The Newcastle Art Gallery Youth Advisory Group acknowledges the Awabakal and Worimi people as the traditional custodians of the land on which we work and live, and pay our deepest respects to Elders past, present and future. The Youth Advisory Group is dedicated to honouring the culture and traditions of our local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities through the visual arts.

Jaimie Carpenter is a proud Kamilaroi (Quirindi) woman who resides on Awabakal land (Newcastle). Together with her two daughters, she is active in the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community promoting cultural practices. The artistry of weaving is one of the ancient traditions that Jaimie practices with honour, and has mastered over years of practice. Professionally, Jaimie has made huge strides within education - her current role is as an Aboriginal Education Officer for the NSW Department of Education.
